Fiona De Vries (81) top scores for Scots

in gale-force winds and rain in Ireland

Scotland, with a total of 423, were lying fifth behind Ireland (410), Sweden (412), England (415) and Spain (420) at the end of the first qualifying round in the European senior women’s amateur team championship at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club, Ireland today (Monday). In gale-force winds and driving rain, the best score of the day was a 77. St Andrews hotelier Fiona De Vries (St Rule), pictured right, top scored for the Scots with a 81 – two ahead of Lorna Bennett (Ladybank).
Next came Moira Thomson (Gullane Ladies') and Fiona Hunter (Baberton) on 86 and Mary Smith (Tain) on 87.
Heather Anderson (Alyth) had the non-counting score of 92. Only the best five from six count in the two stroke-play qualifying rounds.
The top eight teams will progress to the top flight of the match-play after Tuesday’s second qualifying round.
The seven remaining teams will play for the minor placings
