Broadband is here!
What Service provider should you use?
- If you are a light user, cost might be your prerequisite.. The £11.25
per month price quoted in the flyer was for MetroNet, which has a tariff
which only charges you when you are connected.
- If you intend to use it a lot, perhaps running a business from home,
then reliability is important. You pay more for an "always on"
connection and even more for the speed of your connection (speeds range
from 512Kb per sec to 2Mb per sec). Most ISPs would charge about £25-30
per month for a 512Kb "always on" service. The on-line registrations
were sent to Eclipse, but you don't need to choose them (although they
do figure well in league tables).
- If you are a gamer, or intend to download lots of media/graphics,
then speed is your priority, and you should be prepared to pay more
for a faster service.
- You might have more than one computer in your home. You need to consider
what kind of connection you want from your incoming telephone line...
a simple connection is to the USB port on your computer, but if you
have more than one computer, then you need to consider a router to allow
you to network them together. (perhaps even wireless!)
There are several sources of information which can help you make a choice.
- the ADSLGuide, which carries
comparison tables of the major ISPs.
- ISP Review site (consumer-driven
ADSL review site)
- the East Lothian Broadband
Initiative. We can learn from the experiences of the other villages
in East Lothian.
- Aston
Parish Broadband webpages. They have just got Broadband and have
summarised their costs and experiences on finding a Supplier.
- magazines such as Internet
Magazine, which has league tables and advertisements of Broadband
ISPs.
- local help from Bob Jones,
one of the Gullane Broadband campaigners. Bob, who does computer support
for a living, can be contacted at home (Rogart, 42 Erskine Road) or
by telephone 84 2368. His mobile is 07761 167 377.
- alternative local help can be obtained from Keith
Logan, who has also been involved with the Gullane Broadband campaign.
His mobile number is 07919 084917
