Dear Rt Hon Anne Picking,

I am the Broadband Campaign Manager for Gullane.

Broadband gives a fast "always-on" internet connection to homes and businesses for the payment of a monthly charge. BT can supply Broadband through their telephone line, but to do so they need to convert their exchange from analogue to digital. In order to assess whether it is worth their while to convert the exchange, they look at the number of people who have registered an interest, set a trigger level, and when that level is reached they update the exchange.

Several towns and villages within East Lothian have, or are about to have, their exchange converted.

We have reached the magic number of 200 Gullane residents who have registered an interest - not bad for a small place - and we have not yet been given a trigger level. If we had a trigger level we would have a target.

I have already written to BT and they have said that they will review all exchanges with over 150 registrations, but they do not say when.

I am writing to you to ask if you could put some pressure on BT Wholesale to provide a trigger level for Gullane Exchange.

I have a lot of support in the village, including the Community Council.

More information can be found on the Website http://www.gilliankirkwood.com/broadband/

Kind regards

Gillian Kirkwood
