From this letter to the Editor, an article on "Broadband for Gullane"
was published in the East Lothian Courier on Friday 9th October 2003 (Page 21).

Dear Editor,
I would be grateful if you would publish this as a letter or article in
this week's East Lothian Courier.

NB. BROADBAND IS AN EASY-TO-INSTALL, ALWAYS ON INTERNET CONNECTION THAT
GIVES YOU HIGH SPEED ACCESS AND DOWNLOADS FOR A FIXED MONTHLY CHARGE.

BT offers ADSL broadband services over a customerís existing BT
telephone line. The telephone exchange needs to be able to deal with
digital traffic, and BT says that it will upgrade an exchange to
digital once a certain trigger level of registrations is met.
Registration can be done via http://www.btopenworld.com/votebroadband

Haddington, Port Seton, Prestonpans, Tranent, Dunbar and North Berwick
are lucky... they were set a target registration level by BT, reached
their target and their exchanges have been or are about to be upgraded.

Smaller communities such as Gullane are not so lucky. We have 194
already registered, which is a tremendous number for such a small
community, and we haven't even been given a trigger level by BT.

Many similar small communities are now voicing their displeasure with
BT, and there are various avenues we can explore to try and put
pressure on BT to convert our Gullane exchange. If we can get more
registrations I think that we would have a stronger case.

Can I urge your readers
-to register if they have not already done so,
-to check our Campaign website http://www.gilliankirkwood.com/broadband/
-to get in touch with me if they want to be involved with the campaign.

Many thanks
Gillian Kirkwood
