GB Longdriving Championship

email from Kathryn Massey gbladylongdrivechamp2002@whsmithnet.co.uk

"On September 11th 2002, I took part in The Long Driver of Great Britain Championships at Stoke Park Golf Course, Bucks. I had to qualify in August at Manning's Heath Golf Club, Sussex.

The Competition is in its first year in the U.K. each player is given six Golf Balls to hit in 5 minutes. The target is 40 - 60 meters wide and 370 meters long. Each ball has to land within the zone to count.

During my qualifying round at Manning's Heath, I hit 247 yards.

In the final I had to play against Kelly Ford from Sunbury Golf Club. In the final Kelly hit 185.7 yards, with my first ball I hit 237 yards to take the title of Great Britain Long Drive Lady Champion 2002. I was unable to hit the further balls. I would have like to have done this, as I
have an unofficial long drive of 267 yards.

The world Championships are in America in October. The winner of the men's class, will compete in the World Championships this year. The Lady World Champion, Lee Brandon won last year with a drive of 291 yards.

My aim for the coming year: Make women aware of the Long Drive Competition in the U.K and Europe, defend my British Title and take part in the 2003 World Championships in America.

I used a Standard Big Beth Steelhead III 10' wood, to gain my title. Having spoken to the male competitors, who have their clubs specially made for them, there is a great deal of development needed in my game. I have a club speed of 92 miles an hour. With a specially made club I know I could hit the 300 yard mark.

Driving is the strongest part of my game, I have a 27 handicap. I want to be the best in my new found sport and hope to prove this over the coming year.

I look forward to seeing an artical in your publication and website, which will hopefully put interest into a new and exciting form of golf.
