Gillian Roy wins in Portugal

Gillian RoyGILLIAN Roy, pictured right, tournament officer of the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association, has won the 2002 The Glenlivet European golf writers' open indoor putting championship.
The Monifieth player, who has a handicap of five, beat a field of mostly male golf and holiday travel writers in the event which was fiercely contested over a "course" on which the holes were played out on green carpets spread over the basement floor of the Hotel Quinta da Marinha, about 20 miles to the west of Lisbon in Portugal.
Gillian first of all won her group qualifier, in which her opponents included Ladies Golf Union deputy secretary and fellow Scot Susan Simpson.
Then Miss Roy won the Grand Final which ended in a play-off with a Lucille Benjamin from the Netherlands.
Gillian's prize was a 21-year-old bottle of The Glenlivet whisky.
The Glenlivet European indoor putting competition was part of the evening entertainment programme for the week-long European golf writers' open golf championship trip.
Miss Roy was one of the favourites to win the ladies' guest section of the 72-hole Stableford points tournament staged over Belas, Oitavos, Penha Longa and Quinta da Marinha golf courses on four successive days.
Unfortunately, she had to retire after only nine holes of the first round at Belas with red raw blisters on both her heels. Gillian, playing with open backed shoes and no socks, was able to resume play in the second round at Oitavos but eventually finished joint 19th overall with 69pt.
The ladies' title was won by Golf Weekly writer Carly Cummins, a four-handicapper, who finished third overall with 122pt from her four rounds.
Irish Radio golf commentator Greg Allen (handicap 6) won with 127pt from Dutch golf magazine editor Erwin Mulder (handicap 4), only one point behind.
Susan Simpson played only four holes at Belas before retiring for good with the onset of a flu-type bug which forced her to spend many hours in bed at the Hotel Quinta da Marinha.
Unlike Gillian Roy, Susan was not well enough to resume playing golf at Oitavos, Penha Longa and Quinta da Marinha.
