Gillian a winner again

ONCE one of the top Scots in the European women's pro ranks, Gillian
Stewart from Inverness is a winner again. She earned a place in next
month's Women's Professional Golfers Association championship at Royal
Porthcawl by shooting a four-under-par 69 at Ormskirk, Lancashire this
week (ON MONDAY).
The first two finishers in the WPGA competition, sponsored by Sporting
Market Surveys, automatically qualified for the championship and
Gillian shared the top spot with Kirsty Taylor, three shots ahead of
Alison Johns and Katie Tebbitt.
Cathy Panton, another leading Scottish female amateur and professional
player from the last 20 years, finished down the field but she had
already reserved a place in the WPGA championship.
"It was the first time I had marked a card for some time so it was
particularly satisfying to get such a good score," said Gillian whose
career has branched off more into coaching this year.
"I birdied the first, 11th, 13th, 16th and 17th and had only one
bogey, at the fifth. My whole game was in pretty good shape so I hope
I can hold it together for the qualifying for the Weetabix British
Open over the Kintyre course at Turnberry."
Miss Stewart divides her time between her family home at Inverness and
her house in Surrey, which is a useful base for corporate day
commitments in the south of England.
