Claire survives but Cathy KO'd
Aberdonian
Claire Hunter survived a late wobble to make it through to the last day
of the Ladies European Tour Qualifying School at Grenoble, France.
The 24-year-old, based at Eugene, Oregon since she went to the university
there on a golf scholarship, made it into the top 50 and ties who beat
the third-round cut but Claire was only one shot inside the limit mark
of five-over-par 224 after dropping four strokes to par in the last seven
holes.
She returned a three-over-par 76 for four-over 223 after mastering the
outward half for the first time with one-under-par 36, featuring birdies
at the third and seventh and only one bogey at the fifth.
It was the inward half, which had given Miss Hunter few problems over
the first two days, which could have cost her dearly in the final analysis.
She bogeyed the 10th but got that stroke back with a birdie at the par-5
11th.
Then perhaps the importance of the round to her future as a pro golfer
got to her within sight of the clubhouse. Claire bogeyed the 12th, double-bogeyed
the short 14th (her only double bogey of the 54 holes so far) and then
took a bogey 6 at the 492yd par-5 home hole to come home in four-over
40 for a 76.
Starting the day in a fairly comfortable tie for 37th place, Claire finished
it in joint 45th place and she had to endure some hours of agony in the
clubhouse, waiting to see if enough players would beat her score of 223
and push her out of the top 50 and ties. As events transpired, the little
Scot stayed within the safety zone as nine players hit the 224 mark, swelling
the number of qualifiers for the final round to 59.
Now Claire must go for broke over the final 18 holes at the end of which
only the leading 30 and ties will earn full playing rights for next year's
Ladies European Tour.
Cathy Panton-Lewis, who was playing and winning on the British women's
pro tour before Claire Hunter went to primary school, bowed out with a
14-over-par total of 233 after a sad third-round 80 (41-39). Cathy, now
47, had only five birdies in three rounds.
(Friday scoreboard)
Isabella Maconi from Italy leads the field at 11-under-par 208 after a
brilliant third round of six-under-par 67.
