SOUTH AFRICAN WONDER GIRL TANICA STRIKES EARLY IN R&A JUNIOR OPEN

SOUTH African "wonder girl" Tanica Van As, 15-year-old winner of the South African women's open amateur stroke-play championship (she beat Curtis Cup player Emma Duggleby in a play-off for the title) in March, did not take long to stamp her class on the opening day of the R&A Junior Under-16 Open championships at Royal Musselburgh Golf Club today (Monday).
One of the early finishers (before the rounds stretched past the 5hr mark), Tanica, who plays off plus one, had six birdies in a two-under-par 70 after bogeying the last two holes when she seemed set to score in the 60s.
Miss Van As had birdies at the second, ninth, 10th, 12th, 13th and 15th with bogeys at the fourth, 14th, 17th and 18th in halves of 35 (one under par) and 35 (one under par).
Tanica's clubhouse lead was cut to one when Da-Sol Chung from Korea came in with a fine round of 71, not bad for a two-handicapper from the Far East in a blustery day on a Scottish parkland course.
Scotland's representative in the girls' section, Lindsey Hunter, who plays off 13 at Dalmahoy, returned an 81.
The best score in the boys' section was a one-under-par 69 by Peter Meldgaard, a scratch player from Herning Golf Club in Denmark.
Peter had birdies at the third, 11th and 12th and bogeys at the fifth and 15th in halves of 36 (level par) and 33 (one under).
Until the young "Great Dane" came in, the clubhouse lead had been shared on 71, returned by James Minahan III from Spring, Texas and Cian McNamara from Limerick, Ireland.
Minahan, a 15-year-old plus-one player, was out in 34 (two under par) with birdies at the fourth, fifth and ninth and a bogey at the sixth. The American teenager failed to pick up a bogey in his inward half of three-over 37, having bogeys at the 10th, 12th and 17th.
McNamara, a 16-year-old one-handicapper, was three under par after only five holes, thanks to birdies at the second, third and fifth. He did not get another in the remaining 13 holes over which he bogeyed the sixth, seventh, 10th and 13th in halves of 35 (one under) and 36 (two over).
Later, as the sun came out in the afternoon, Alexandre Kaleka from France and Reinier Saxton of the Netherlands made it a quadruple tie for second place on 71.
Scotland's representative in the boys' section, Alistair Weir, who plays off three at Stonehaven, had a 78.
In the special invitation competition for offspring of European Tour players, Daniel Torrance, five-handicap son of the Ryder Cup skipper, did well to get it round in 75, considering he had a quadruple bogey 8 at the 10th where he snap-hooked his drive and took five to get down from 100yd.
Daniel, who is a member at Sunningdale, had birdied the third and the fourth.
Bernhard Langer's son, Stefan, had an 88 and the Cabrera brothers, Angela and Frederico 95 and 80 respectively.
