WHAT a day for Gemma Webster at the BP Scottish girls championship at sunny Powfoot golf course on the Solway Firth yesterday (Wed).
In her morning first-round tie, the Hilton Park player knocked out the highly-rated Sharon Main from Lossiemouth with a hole in one with a seven-iron at the 130yd 15th on her way to a shock 4 and 2 win.
Then Miss Webster performed an even bigger giant-killing act in the afternoon to remove the top seed and the title-favourite, Jenna Wilson (Strathaven) from the championship. Gemma's par golf was good enough to see her win by one hole. She now plays Inverness women's club champion for the past two years, Kerri Harper.
Dawn Dewar (Monifieth), the Angus women's county champion and the No 2 qualifier, is through to the last eight and her suspect left wrist, strapped up due to tendonitis, stood up well to 34 holes' play. Dawn's next opponent is Lesley Hendry (Routenburn) who beat Roseanne Niven, the youngest ever Crieff women's club champion at the age of 13, by 3 and 1.
