STEVEN PIPS EMMA FOR ROYAL DORNOCH JUNIOR OPEN TITLE

STEVEN Querns (Glasgow Victoria) won the overall championship for the Peter de Savary Trophy at the Donald Ross junior open tournament at Royal Dornoch Golf Club on Wednesday in the tightest of finishes with Emma Fernie (Minto).
They both totalled 40 pt under the competition's stableford format. A card countback gave Steven the No 1 position with 22pt for the inward half to Emma's 19.
Querns had finished fourth in the boys' section of the recent Bank of Scotland Junior Masters over the Queen's Course, Gleneagles.
Emma Fairnie is a 14-year-old pupil at Loretto School, Musselburgh. She plays off 13 and had a gross score of 87, with a 7 at the second hole. She finished down the field in the Gleneagles event but, over a much tougher course in the Royal Dornoch championship links, she improved by a considerable margin.
Emma won the "Best Girl" title by one point from Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle). Kylie was runner-up in the Bank of Scotland Junior Masters' girls' section.
Alison Tait (Moffat) was third with 38pt.
In the "Best Boy" category, Andrew Stewart (Aberdour) just had the edge over Andrew Wright (The Roxburghe) after they both totalled 39pt. The inward half points scores were the tie-breaker again with Stewart scoring 20 over the second nine, and Wright 19.
Andrew Stewart also has the best gross score of the day, a 73, despite a double-bogey 5 at6 the sixth. He finished the outward half birdie-eagle. Steven Querns had a gross 76 (40-36).
A total of 96 boys and girls took part, some from as far away as Iceland, Norway and Sweden.
