DEFENDING CHAMP ANNE LAING FOURTH IN IRISH STROKE PLAY
DEFENDING champion Anne Laing (Vale of Leven) finished fourth in the Irish
women's open amateur stroke-play golf championship at Dundalk Golf Club
on Sunday.
Anne, third overnight, had rounds of 72, 73 and 77 against the par and
CSS of 73 for a 54-hole total of three-over-par 222 - eight strokes behind
Rebecca Coakley (Carlow) (pictured) and Martina Gillen (Beaverstown).
 They
both finished on five-under 214 but there was no play-off. Instead, as
per the regulations for the tournament, the title went to Rebecca Coakley,
winner of the Irish women's closed championship in June, by virtue of
her having the lower total from the second and third rounds.
The normal convention is for the better last round to prevail in a card
countback but they do things differently in Ireland!
Rebecca, who had an outstanding second round on Saturday of 65, led by
three strokes from Martina Gillen, who is a golf scholarship student at
Kent State University in America.
But Rebecca slumped to a closing 75 and Martin was able to make up the
deficit with a score of 72.
Miss Coakley had beaten Miss Gillen in the semi-finals of the Irish championship
and went on to beat Curtis Cup player Alison Coffey in the final, thus
preventing Miss Coffey winning the title three years in a row.
Success in the Irish women's open stroke-play means Rebecca Coakley has
completed a notable double this season.
Denmark's Anne Larsen, a frequent visitor to the Great Britain & Ireland
women's amateur circuit, finished third on 216.
British and Scottish universities champion Lynn Kenny (Stirling University)
gave Scotland a second top-10 finisher with scores of 76, 73 and 75 to
tie for fifth place on 224.
In fact, there were six Scots in all in the final top 20.
Linzi Morton (Tulliallan) had scores of 74, 77 and 77 to be joint 10th
on 228.
Lyndsey Devenish from Cruden Bay came joint 15th on 232 with 76, 77 and
79.
Also in the top 20 were Cara Gruber (Stirling University) on 235 and Susan
Wood (Drumpellier) on 236.
