Curtis Cup reject Becky wins Euro title

WELSH teenager Becky Brewerton, the Abergele girl ignored by the selectors for Great Britain & Ireland's Curtis Cup team, underlined the folly of that decision by winning the European women's amateur championship at Kristiandstad, Sweden.
On a windy final day over the par-72 course, 19-year-old Becky was able to make up a one-stroke deficit on the overnight leader, another teenager, Dewi-Claire Schreefel from the Netherlands.
"I have channelled my anger at not being selected for the Curtis Cup match into my golf since then," said Becky who won the British women's stroke-play title when she was only 16 and has twice been Welsh women's championship before her 20th birthday.
Miss Brewerton, a full-time amateur who says she cannot afford to turn professional until she finds a sponsor, had a closing round of three-over-par 75 for a 72-hole total of level par 22.
Becky is the second GB&I player in the past three years to win the title, following in the footsteps of Emma Duggleby (Malton & Norton) in 2000 after a lean period following the 1992 success of England international Joan Morley.
Miss Brewerton, who has been selected along with Heather Stirling and Emma Duggleby to represent GB&I in the women's world amateur team championship for the Espirito Santo Trophy at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in October, won the 2002 European title by two shots by Miss Schreefel who fell away to a 78, which included a triple bogey, for 290.
Uncapped England player Nicola Timmins from Sene Valley, Kent, was a surprise finisher as high as joint third, even with a final round of 80, on 290.
Scottish champion Heather Stirling from Bridge of Allan, who is turning pro at the end of the season, finished a creditable seventh on 297 after a closing round of 77.
Stirling University student Lynn Kenny from Dunblane finished joint 58th with a final round of 78 for 25-over-par 313.
The other Scot in the field, Linzi Morton (Tulliallan), was not among the leading 74 players who made the cut after three rounds. Sarah Heath (Shifnal), who also played in last week's home internationals, was another who did not qualify for the final round.
Defending champion Martina Eberl from Munich also suffered the ignomy of not playing all four rounds.
