Scots bound for Frankfurt
THE Germany Golf Federation, hosts to the biennial European women's amateur
team golf championshp next year, have finally decided that the five-day
event will be played at Frankfurter Golf Club, near the international
airport, from July 8 to 12.
No reasons have been given for the long delay in naming the venue but
it is understood that the Germans had experienced difficulty in finding
a sponsor to cover the cost of staging the tournament.
Scotland gained bronze medals last year at Monte Castrove, Spain where
bad weather wiped out the last two days of match-play after the Scots
had toppled the defending champions, France 4 1/2-2 1/2 in the quarter-finals.
The European Golf Association decided that the award of the medals should
be decided by the order the four surviving countries had occuped at the
end of the 36-hole stroke-play qualifying at the beginning of the tournament.
That meant Sweden (750) were gold medal winners ahead of Spain (75) and
Scotland (762) with Italy (766) gaining no medals.
Pam Gordon from Inverness captained the Scots' squad of six in Spain.
The skipper of the team for Frankfurt next year has still to be named.
