INTRO
by Colin Farquharson
FOR for one of the few times in the 41-year history of this prestigious
women's open tournament, the Astor Salver 36-hole event had to be abandoned
due to prolonged heavy rain with only 18 of the scheduled 36 holes completed
at The Berkshire Golf Club on Wednesday (June 5).
One half of the field completed a round on the Blue Course and the other
half got through 18 holes on the Red Course but, with no let-up in the
rain, and the courses becoming waterlogged, the organisers called a halt
about 2.30pm before any of the second rounds had been completed.
Because two different courses were being used, it was impossible to declare
a winner on the scores after 18 holes and so no winner for the year 2002
will be listed for the Astor Salver in the golfing record books.
Scottish junior champion Lynn Kenny, the Stirling University golf scholarship
student from Dunblane, led the returns at the Blue Course with a two-under-par
71, which was also two under the CSS. The next best score on that circuit
was a 72 from Miss K Tenniswood from nearby Wentowrth.
Defending champion Eleanor Pilgrim (St Pierre), who recently regained
the Welsh title, finished on 77 and was probably not disappointed that
the whole thing was scrubbed.
Two shots behind Eleanor was last year's British girls' match-play and
stroke-play champion, Clare Queen (Drumpellier).
Linzi Morton (Tulliallan), last year's Scottish champion, had a 79, the
same score as another LGU Elite Squad membere, Fame More from Chesterfield.
England international Kerry Smith from Waterlooville had cause for regrets
at the abandonment. After all, despite the rain, she shot a six-under-par
67 to lead the Red Course returns.
She and Fiona Brown (Heswall), with a 69, were the only players to score
under 72 on the Red Course.
Vikki Laing (Musselburgh), recently returned after another nine months'
golf in the California sunshine, courtesy of the University of California
Berkeley), had a 73.
