PERTH & KINROSS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Strathmore Golf Centre, Alyth.

DAWN IS FIRST TIME WINNER OF P AND K TITLE

LOCAL knowledge paid off in a big way for Dawn Butchart in the Perth & Kinross women's county golf championship at Strathmore Golf Centre, Alyth.

A member of the host club, Dawn won the title for the first time, beating former champion Claire Meir (Muckhart) by 2 and 1 in the final yesterday (Sunday) afternoon.

Dawn, who had beaten leading qualifier Avril Ker (Craigie Hill) 6 and 5 in the morning semi-finals,  was never in arrears after winning the eighth and ninth to turn with a two-hole lead. Claire fell three down with some bunker trouble at the 13th but she hit back immediately to win the next with a birdie. The last three holes were halved.

Defending champion Jane Yellowlees (Murrayshall) lost in the first round of the match-play after qualifying in third place.

The Gibb Trophy for the winner of the handicap section went to Carol Lambie (Dunkeld & Birnham) who beat Margaret McGlashan (Blairgowrie) by 2 and 1 in the final.

Judith Blake (Pitlochry) did not qualify for the match-play stages in either the scratch or handicap sections but she finished the opening session of play  happier than most. That's because she had a hole in one at the 17th (189yd). She was partnered by H Welsh and A Hood.
