2002 CLARK ROSEBOWL FINAL
From Colin Farquharson
For the first time in living memory, the final of the Scottish womens
championship subsidiary competition for those who did not make the top
flight, the Clark Rosebowl, was played immediately ahead of the championship
final at Stranraer.
And, it provided such a good contest, that there may well be a move to
make a Saturday morning Clark Rosebowl final a permanent part of the programme
instead of reverting back to the traditional Friday afternoon final.
The 2002 Clark Rosebowl final went to the 20th hole before
Jocelyn Carthew (Ladybank) beat Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh).
Noreen, the current Scottish Veteran Ladies champion, had made a wonderful
start by holing a bunker shot at the first and following that up by winning
the second as well to be two up after two.
And yet, by the turn, Jocelyn was three up.
Miss Carthew, beaten in the final of the Fife womens county championship
a few weeks ago and sales and marketing officer of the Scottish National
Golf Academy at Drumoig, won five holes in a row from the fifth after
the third and fourth had been halved.
But there were more twists and turns in the final story to come.
Mrs Fenton wiped out her three-hole deficit over the inward half, helped
by her opponent three-putting the 13th.
The 16th, 17th and 18th were nail-biting
halves.
After the first extra hole had been halved, Jocelyn had a very good drive
at the 20th while Noreen landed up in the ditch with her second.
Mrs Fenton made a brave bid to retrieve the situation but, to no avail,
Miss Carthew was the winner of the Clark Rosebowl.
