Clare Queen
Clare
Queen (Drumpellier), current British Girls Matchplay and Strokeplay Champion,
explains why she decided on a British University.
"I felt that my main priority was to go to a university which had
a good academic record. At the end of 2000 when I was applying to Uni
I played off a handicap of 4 and did not think I was good enough to get
into one of the top Universities in America. So I decided to go to Strathclyde
University, which has a very good Business School. I receive a bursary
of £2500 from the R&A and also Lottery Funding, both of which are helping
to fund my golf this season.
Although at the time I was disappointed not to be going to the States,
I do not regret my decision to stay in Scotland. After a good season last
year I am in the SLGA A-squad and I am also 1st reserve for the GB&I squad.
I believe that by staying in Scotland, my chances of gaining a place in
the Home International team over the next few years are greater than if
I was in the States. Ultimately, I would like to gain a place in the GB&I
squad in the next few years.
Had I gone to the States I would not have had the opportunity to travel
to South Africa with the other members of the GB&I squad, an experience
which was fantastic and showed me what I have to do to reach a higher
level. I believe that staying in Scotland will help me to achieve both
of these goals over the next few years without compromising my education."
