Now Carly (9) could be the world's youngest female 13-handicapper
Carly
Booth, the Perthshire farmer's daughter, who made the headlines last year
when, at the age of eight, she became the youngest player in Ladies Golf
Union history to acquire a handicap as low as 20, has kept up her rate
of improvement.
In the 12 months since then, Carly has cut seven strokes off her handicap.
At nine years of age, she must be the youngest female 13-handicapper in
the British Isles if not farther afield.
One
of the milestones in her golfing career was achieved by Miss Booth over
the Auchterarder course recently. She broke 80 for the first time with
a gross score of 78. That brought her handicap down from 17 to 14 and
then, later in the week,an 83 shaved another stroke off her rating.
Just in case, you think that Carly Booth has a one-track or even one-sport
mind, she is also a very good swimmer and a member of the Scotland girls'
gymnastics club.
Carly's dad, Wallace Booth, a former Commonwealth Games medallist as a
wrestler, built a private 13-hole golf course and a gymnasium on their
farm at Mill O' Fortune, near Comrie for the use of Carly and her older
brother.
Wallace,
junior, was Scottish Under-16 boys golf champion and has since gone on
to play for the Scotland under-18 boys international team.
Young Wallace has also represented Britain as a junior wrestler but has
cut back on his commitments to that sport because of the danger of an
injury affecting his developing golf career.
