ADA O'SULLIVAN TO REPLACE ALISON DAVIDSON AS CAPTAIN
OF TEAM FOR ESPIRITO SANTO TROPHY
Ada O'Sullivan will replace Alison Davidson as captain of the GB&I
team which will compete for the Espirito Santo Trophy - the Women's
World Amateur Team Championship - to be played at the Saujana Golf &
Country Club, Kaula Lumpur from 16th to 19th October 2002.
In January Mrs Davidson was named as captain but regrettably has had
to resign due to the impending birth of her first child later this
year.
Ms O'Sullivan, 37, had a long career in Irish amateur golf and played
for her country from 1982 to 1997. Before a back injury forced her
retirement from top level golf, she was the Irish Stroke Play Champion
in 1987 and won the European Masters Stroke Play Championship at
Sotogrande in 1994. She captained the Irish Junior teams in Europe in
1998 and 2000 and at the Home Internationals from 1998 to 1999.
Although now not playing golf at international level, Ada has still
managed to retain a handicap of scratch at her home club, Monkstown,
Cork.
Commenting on what to her was a total surprise Ms O'Sullivan said:
"The letter inviting me to take up the captaincy came out of the blue.
I was in a state of shock but naturally am delighted to be able to
continue my involvement with international golf. I am genuinely
honoured."
France are the current holders of the Espirito Santo Trophy which they
won in 2000 at the Sporting Club, Berlin. That was their only success
in the Championship since their win in the inaugural tournament in
1964. Since then, the U.S. have won on no fewer than 13 occasions with
GB&I hopeful this year of a first success.
