DEESIDE WIN ABERDEENSHIRE SCRATCH LEAGUE
DEESIDE are the first winners of the Golfview Trophy, presented by the
publishers of a North-east golf monthly magazine, to the champions of
the AberdeenshireWomen's Scratch League. They beat Murcar by 2 ½-1 ½ at
Murcar in the final between the winners of Section A and Section B.
The results were (Murcar players first):
Laura McLardy halved with Lynne McPherson.
Carol Wilson lost to Fiona Hay 3 and 1.
Pat Wilson beat Mariva Millership 4 and 3.
Frances Neish lost to Vivien Harper 3 and 1.
It was the second big win of the season for the Bieldside quartet. They
had earlier captured the Lyon Foursomes knock-out tournament at Newmachar.
Final points totals in the sections were:
Section A: Deeside 6pt (12.5 games won), Banchory 6pt (11), Westhill 4pt,
Aboyne 4pt, Ballater 0pt.
Section B: Murcar 6pt, Aberdeen Ladies 5pt, Peterhead 4pt, Ellon 3pt,
Inverurie 2pt.
It was Aberdeenshire county captain Pat Wilson (Murcar) who had the idea
of introducing a scratch league for clubs to give players, particularly
those who might develop to county team standard, more experience of match-play.
The league started last year when Banchory were the winners. Their names
will also be inscribed on the Golfview Trophy.
Mrs Wilson admits that the concept of scratch match-play between clubs
does not, as yet, appeal as much to North-east players as it does in the
West of Scotland where their Greenlees Trophy league has three divisions
with promotion and relegation and has been running successfully for a
long number of years.
"We have a long way to go yet. We just don't have the tradition of scratch
match-play in the North-east and it looks like being a gradual process
of winning people and clubs over to the idea," said Pat. "I am very pleased
that we are likely to have Cruden Bay, one of the most competitive women's
clubs in the area, making their debuts next year.
"The problem, as a few clubs perceive it, is that they do not feel they
have enough low-handicap players to be competitive but match-play is a
great leveller. Time and again in this season's scratch league, players
were beating opponents who had much lower handicaps than they had."
There are 32 clubs with women's sections in Aberdeenshire. Surely, they
can do better than having fewer than a dozen of them competing in a scratch
league?
